He Laughed at My Computer Skills—Now He Asks Me for Help!

There was a time when all I knew about the digital space was how to search on Google and how to create a Google page. Given how digitally advanced each of us has become over the past few years, terms like HTML and JavaScript have made their way into almost all conversations. However, it wasn't as easy for me as it seemed for others. I was struggling to make sense, and every concept was like a foreign idea to me. 

To make things worse, I had a friend—let’s call him Raj. He certainly made sure I never forgot how “clueless” I was. Raj was always tech-savvy. The worst thing is that he would kick-start conversations about PHPMyAdmin and MySQL like he was reciting poetry. Whenever I asked him anything about the content of his conversation, he would ridicule me and ask, “Are you sure that you belong to this generation itself?”. That smirk made me extremely irritated. I kept on telling myself, it's okay, we will learn. And soon, I was able to learn! I just had a hard time understanding where to begin. 

Time For Some Determination and Zeal

I distinctly remember that after a day or such a harrowing and particularly embarrassing experience, I turned to learning more. Little did I know that soon this quest for knowledge would turn into a desire to achieve more. I began searching online for resources. The best part is that each lesson chipped away at the insecurity I once had. However, I made it a point that I would not stop so easily. I would work hard and keep on learning until I had every concept on my fingertips. 

Diving a Little Deeper

By the end of the month, I was extremely confident with the java scripts course that I had picked up and wanted to learn something more. I was now adept at creating the best interactive elements for my practice website. It was a cakewalk indeed. Can you believe that for someone who had never been able to achieve anything in life in the digital space, I was able to crack how to create pop-ups, sliders and and to add to that, form validators from scratch. My inner critic was silent, and finally, I was happy with the kind of results I was achieving. It made me feel confident from within. 

Soon, I realized that it was not only the zeal or passion that drove me to achieve the best. It was also a lot about the love that I had started to harbour for website development. It was like an inner calling for me, something that I slowly started to realize that I was good at. I had a few friends working as developers, and I asked them if I could turn this into a full-blown career, and the answer was a roaring affirmative. What is it that drew me to the platform? It wasn’t just about coding. It was also about solving problems, being creative, and building something real from nothing.

I finally took the leap of faith, and thankfully, it has been one of the best decisions that I have ever made in life. I enrolled in a MySQL course. I realized that I had learnt enough about JavaScript and HTML, and SEO. Finally, it was time to challenge myself and see if I was able to go to the edge of the course and establish myself as the best. Reading and writing data, performing complex queries, and understanding relational models simply blew me away.  PHPMyAdmin became my playground where I practiced SQL commands and connected databases to my websites.

Eventually, I started to prepare to learn PHP to create server side scripts. Now, I was able to build websites which are dynamic in nature. It helped users to sign up with ease and eventually they could navigate across the website as well. They could interact with the content on the website. From the front end till the back end, I was thankfully able to build a full stack skill set. 

The Winning Moment 

Once I completed my course, I was able to showcase my knowledge set confidently. I knew with the kind of creativity I exhibited, it would be just a matter of a few months before I landed a big gig. The best part is that it was true. Within a few months, I was able to end up in one of the biggest projects of all time. The friend, Raj, who used to laugh at me, came to me asking for advice.
